Talk raises vital funds for Ashburton Royal British Legion Appeal

A SPECIALLY-organised talk about the history of one of Britain’s most iconic and fascinating buildings has raised more than £250 for a Devon charity.

History enthusiast Mel Stride delivered the special talk about the history of the Tower of London to more than 100 people at the Ashburton Conservative club on Sunday, March 7th.

The packed event raised more than £250 for the Ashburton Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal fund through a collection of those present.

Mel’s talk on the Tower of London covered many interesting topics, including the crown jewels and the almost successful attempt to steal them, as well as how two kings and three queens met their grim and grizzly end within the tower’s walls.

Mel who is the Conservative prospective MP for Central Devon gives regular history talks to raise money for charity and local community organisations and is a keen supporter of the Royal British Legion.

Speaking after the event, Mel said: “Our country owes so much to our brave servicemen and servicewomen and the Royal British Legion is right at the forefront of providing them and their families with practical help when they need it.”

Dave Lewis, Chairman of the Ashburton branch of the Royal British Legion said, “Mel’s talk was informative and highly entertaining. His support for the Royal British Legion is really appreciated and we are delighted with the money he raised. It is needed now more than ever.”
